April 18, 2024 | 11:44 PM

Dickey Betts, the co-founder and legendary guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band, has passed away at the age of 80. The Southern rock icon was known for his blistering guitar solos and his raucous honky-tonk lifestyle.

Betts helped form the Allman Brothers Band in 1969, alongside Gregg Allman, Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, and Butch Trucks. The band quickly gained a reputation for their innovative blend of blues, rock, and country music, with Betts' guitar playing a key role in their sound.

Betts' signature song, "Ramblin' Man," became an anthem for the band and earned him widespread recognition. He was also known for his collaborations with other guitarists, including Duane Allman and Eric Clapton.

Beyond his music, Betts was known for his flamboyant personality and his hard-living lifestyle. He often clashed with other members of the Allman Brothers Band, but his fiery spirit and passion for music were undeniable.

Following the death of Duane Allman in 1971, Betts became the de facto leader of the band. He continued to tour and record with the Allman Brothers Band until 2000, when he left the group due to health problems.

In recent years, Betts had been suffering from a number of health issues, including Alzheimer's disease. He died peacefully at his home in Sarasota, Florida, surrounded by family and friends.

Dickey Betts will be remembered as one of the greatest guitarists in rock and roll history. His fiery playing and honky-tonk spirit will live on forever in the hearts of his fans.
