Alejandro Mayorkas: First Latino and Immigrant to Lead Homeland Security

Early Life and Career

Alejandro Nicolas Mayorkas was born on November 24, 1959, in Havana, Cuba.

After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, and Loyola Law School, Mayorkas began his career as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California.

Political Career

In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Mayorkas as Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

In this role, he oversaw the implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the expansion of pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

From 2013 to 2016, Mayorkas served as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security.

In this capacity, he focused on strengthening border security, improving immigration enforcement, and protecting critical infrastructure.

Secretary of Homeland Security

In 2021, Mayorkas was nominated by President Joe Biden as Secretary of Homeland Security.

He was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 56-43, becoming the first Latino and immigrant to hold this position.

As Secretary, Mayorkas has focused on addressing the surge in illegal immigration, strengthening cybersecurity, and countering terrorism.

He has also worked to reform the asylum system and promote equity and inclusion within the Department of Homeland Security.

Controversy

In January 2024, House Republicans indicated their intention to move forward with two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas.

The articles allege that Mayorkas failed to secure the border and deliberately misled Congress about the situation at the southern border.

Mayorkas has denied the allegations and vowed to continue working to protect the country.

The impeachment proceedings are ongoing and it remains to be seen whether the Senate will vote to remove him from office.
